Beach Cleanup Inspires A New Generation to Take Action
For thousands of students, a day at the beach became a hands-on lesson in environmental stewardship.

As part of an LA City Sanitation educational program, students learn how litter dropped on city streets can be carried through storm drains during rainstorms and ultimately pollute local beaches and the ocean.

The program takes place in schools throughout the year and culminates with beach cleanup events, where thousands of students help remove trash from the shoreline.

During the cleanup, students collected a variety of litter, including plastic straws, bottle caps, lids, and cups. Understanding how these items affect marine ecosystems motivated many of them to help keep the beach clean.

By connecting classroom lessons with real-world action, the program helps students develop a deeper understanding of their environmental impact. The experience encourages responsible habits and fosters a lasting appreciation for protecting local beaches, waterways, and natural resources.
