Celebrating 40 Years of Hollywood Boulevard as a National Historic District
Hollywood Boulevard is marking a milestone this year: four decades as a national historic district.

For most people, Los Angeles and Hollywood are inseparable thanks to decades of films and television. But the past few years have been hard on the district. Empty storefronts and closed businesses are common sights, and the area hasn’t always received the attention or investment it needs. Part of the anniversary effort is aimed at changing that. Local leaders have identified a handful of historic properties that could be revived to help bring new life to the boulevard.

Hollywood Heritage's storefront now doubles as an exhibition space, featuring a detailed 1936 miniature model of Hollywood. The space also hosts workshops and meetings for business owners who want to understand how historic tax credits work and what options they have to restore older buildings. Alongside the exhibit and educational programs, the organization maintains an archive and rotating displays that highlight sites—past and present—that once made Hollywood a vibrant place to live, shop, and work.

For anyone visiting Los Angeles, the invitation is simple: take another look at Hollywood. Walk Hollywood Boulevard. Wander down Sunset. The neighborhood has changed, and it’s still changing.
