City Beat: LA28 Volunteer Program, Adopt a Furry Friend weekend, Standard Plan Pilot Program
City Beat this week covers the LA28 volunteer launch, Adopt a Furry Friend weekend, and updates on the Standard Plan Pilot Program.

Los Angeles is gearing up for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games with the launch of the official LA28 volunteer program. Organizers say the effort starts years ahead of the opening ceremony to build a stronger model for future host cities and leave a lasting legacy for Los Angeles. Mayor Karen Bass called volunteers essential to shaping the experience for both fans and athletes.
Angelenos can now register their interest at LA28.org.

In other city news, LA Animal Services is hosting its Adopt a Furry Friend weekend with reduced adoption fees. Every adopted pet goes home spayed or neutered, vaccinated, licensed, and microchipped. Many dogs may also qualify for free training classes. Residents can visit any of the six city shelters to meet animals ready for new homes.
Details are available at LAAnimalServices.com/adopt.

Mayor Bass also announced the first approvals under the city’s Standard Plan Pilot Program, created to speed the rebuilding of single family homes in the Palisades. The program offers a library of pre-approved, code compliant home designs to cut permitting delays. About 1,200 plans have already been approved, and more than a thousand permits have been issued. The mayor said the city will keep pushing to accelerate the rebuilding of homes, businesses, and community spaces.
