"Defying Gravity" and Gaining Empowerment at Pretty in Pink
The 2026 Pretty in Pink Girls Empowerment Conference got underway, this year with a Wicked theme, Defying Gravity. The annual conference hosted a wide variety of activities throughout the day, including taekwondo, mental health talks, singing, soccer, and a STEM lab.
Pretty in Pink's mission is to provide girls access to activities and talks they might not otherwise experience. The conference has been running for 15 years, and has created lasting life changes for the attendees. The ultimate goal is for every girl to leave the event feeling valued, loved, and important.
Organized by L.A. City's Department of Recreation and Parks, the program focuses on keeping participants busy, healthy, and involved. Co-founder Yessica Famoso said she created Pretty in Pink to give access to resources she didn't have growing up. Fifteen years on, Famoso knows she is making a difference when she sees the girls who attend light up.
