First African-American Postmaster Honored: The Legacy of Nancy Avery
The San Fernando Valley recently gathered to celebrate the life of Nancy Avery. Appointed by President John F. Kennedy in the 1960s, Avery made history as the first African-American postmaster in the region.

Avery was known for her "positive spirit" and her ability to challenge those around her to be better. Those she hired decades ago eventually rose to become postmasters themselves, proving that her mentorship created a lasting chain of leadership.

Avery’s story serves as a powerful reminder of how one person can change a neighborhood's history. It was a day of smiles and stories, proving that while Avery may be gone, her influence remains a prominent part of the Valley's soul.
