Groundbreaking of the Benjamin Franklin Library in Boyle Heights
Boyle Heights celebrated a long-awaited milestone today as community leaders and residents gathered for the groundbreaking of the Benjamin Franklin Branch Library.
Closed since 2020, the library has been a top priority for renewed investment. Construction is now officially underway with a goal to reopen the doors in 14 months.
The project will bring major upgrades to the building, including new HVAC and lighting systems, energy-efficient improvements, refreshed landscaping, a renovated entry and exit, and new exterior paint. The renovated branch will also feature a “Citizens Corner,” a dedicated space where community members can attend citizenship classes. The goal is to create a modern, sustainable, and welcoming library that better serves local families, students, and seniors.
For Boyle Heights, the library is more than a place to borrow books. It has long been a community hub where kids receive tutoring, find relief from extreme heat, and residents access essential resources. Today’s groundbreaking marks the start of bringing that vital space back to the neighborhood. For more information about the project and library services, visit LAPL.org.
