L.A. City Council Votes to Ban Pretextual Traffic Stops
The Los Angeles City Council voted to address racial profiling by banning pretextual traffic stops by the Los Angeles Police Department.
Push LA and Catalyst California joined City leaders and community partners to mark the milestone, with the shared goal of helping ensure that Black and Brown drivers in Los Angeles can travel with the same sense of safety and freedom as white drivers.
The policy narrows the circumstances under which officers may initiate traffic stops for minor equipment or non-safety-related violations, such as a broken taillight or objects hanging from a rearview mirror.
Following the Council’s vote, the policy moved to the Los Angeles Police Department for implementation.
