Library Event Celebrates Tongva Culture as Part of LA Made Series
As part of its LA Made series, the Los Angeles Public Library hosted a community event celebrating Tongva culture and highlighting the continued presence of the region’s Indigenous communities. The series is designed to showcase the many cultures that shape Los Angeles and introduce patrons to traditions they may not otherwise encounter.

Library staff said the event serves as a reminder that Los Angeles has always had an Indigenous population and continues to be home to Tongva people. Organizers emphasized the importance of understanding the land’s original inhabitants and recognizing the artists and storytellers who carry that history forward.

Speakers addressed long-standing misconceptions about the Tongva community, including the false notion that Tongva people no longer exist. They noted that despite the impact of mission systems and centuries of displacement, Tongva families remain present and active in preserving their heritage.

Attendees reflected on the significance of gathering on Tongva homelands and sharing space with people eager to learn more. Participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity to honor their ancestors and highlight the resilience of their community.

The event also aligned with Native American Heritage Month. The month offers a chance to explore the diversity within Los Angeles, understand the origins of its many cultures, and help sustain their stories for future generations.
