Los Angeles Declares October 17 as Celia Cruz Day
The City of Los Angeles honored the life and legacy of Celia Cruz, widely known as the “Queen of Salsa,” with a celebration at City Hall attended by family members, community members, and longtime fans.

Speakers, including Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez of Council District 13, shared how Cruz’s music shaped their own lives, recalling hearing her songs at home, community events, quinceañeras, and weddings. Participants noted that while Cruz was Cuban, her music is embraced across Latin America and remains familiar to Spanish-speaking audiences worldwide.

The program included a dance performance featuring children and adults wearing flags representing various Latin American countries. Attendees described the gathering as a meaningful moment for those who knew Cruz personally and for those who grew up with her music.

The city formally declared October 17 as Celia Cruz Day in Los Angeles, marking the occasion with an official certificate presented during the event.
