The Magic of Storytime: Raising Kids Who Love to Read
On any given week at the Los Angeles Public Library, the sound of stories being shared fills the room as children gather for the STAR program.

STAR—short for Storytelling and Reading—brings volunteers and young readers together, creating moments where books come alive through shared reading and conversation. Volunteers visit the library several times a week to read with children, listen as children read aloud, and help spark a lasting love of books.

For Jeffrey Weinstein, those moments are especially meaningful. A former children’s librarian of 20 years, Weinstein found himself missing the simple joy of reading to kids after retiring. That longing led him to the STAR program, where he has been volunteering for the past two years. For him, reading isn’t just an activity—it’s a vital part of how children learn, grow, and connect with the world around them.

The STAR program does more than introduce children to books. It helps them feel at home in the library, encourages curiosity, and turns reading into a positive, shared experience. Weinstein says the program also reaches beyond the library walls, showing parents how reading together at home can strengthen a child’s relationship with books.

Open and free to the public, the STAR program continues to welcome families into the library, one story at a time. For more information about STAR and other programs, visit LAPL.org.
