Making Griffith Park Safer for Cyclists and Everyone
After years of community advocacy and efforts to prevent future traffic tragedies, Griffith Park's largest-ever safety improvement project is officially complete.
City leaders, community advocates, and residents gathered in Griffith Park to celebrate the opening of new bike lanes and major safety improvements along Crystal Springs Drive and Zoo Drive.
Representing the largest safety investment in Griffith Park's history, the project was made possible through a $4 million state earmark secured by former California Assembly Member Laura Friedman. Improvements include newly repaved roadways, dedicated space for cyclists and pedestrians, and traffic-calming measures designed to reduce cut-through traffic and improve safety for all park users.
The project was shaped by years of community advocacy following several serious traffic incidents, including the 2022 hit-and-run death of cyclist Andrew Jelmert and a near-fatal hit-and-run crash in 2013 that inspired the creation of Streets Are For Everyone.
