Ruth Bader Ginsburg Memorial Opens at Van Nuys Civic Center
On November 6, 2025, Councilmember Imelda Padilla of Council District 6 and Van Nuys Neighborhood Council President Kathy Schreiner spoke at the grand opening of the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Memorial at the Van Nuys Civic Center.
Artist Saya Woolfalk, who spent six years developing the monument, drew inspiration from Justice Ginsburg’s iconic collars. After speaking with family members — including her daughter Jane Ginsburg — Woolfalk designed the monument’s decorative ceiling and floor to reflect this personal detail. The design serves as a reminder of how many more doors women and girls can now open, thanks to the path Justice Ginsburg helped create.
Kathy Schreiner highlighted Justice Ginsburg’s legacy as a powerful example for young women. She also encouraged visitors to see the space — located next to the Van Nuys Branch Library — as a tribute to Ginsburg’s love of books, reading, and writing.
With support from the Bureau of Engineering, Department of Cultural Affairs, and Board of Public Works, the memorial honors both Ginsburg’s lasting impact and the spirit of justice and progress she championed — now rooted in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, in the City of Los Angeles.
