Under Discussion: Residential Voting for the City of Los Angeles
A proposal is being considered in Los Angeles that would grant local voting rights to non-citizen residents.

Supporters argue that residents who work, pay taxes, raise families, and contribute to the city's economy should have a voice in local decisions that directly affect their communities. The proposal would extend voting rights in local elections to groups such as legal permanent residents, DACA recipients, and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders.

Advocates note that thousands of non-citizen residents currently have no say in electing local leaders or shaping policies related to schools and City Council decisions, despite their significant contributions to the city. Before the measure can take effect, it must advance through the Rules Committee and the full City Council, after which it could be placed before Los Angeles voters in a future November election.
