From Watts to Greatness: Reggie Andrews
Discover the legacy of a true Los Angeles icon at the William Grant Still Arts Center, where music, mentorship, and community come together in the latest African-American Composer Series exhibition, “Mystic Soil: From the Roots of Reggie Andrews.”
Named after renowned composer William Grant Still, the Center honors his legacy each spring by celebrating influential African-American composers while connecting students to their work through arts education. This year’s exhibition highlights the life and impact of Reggie Andrews—an educator and musician who spent more than 40 years teaching at Locke High School in Watts, shaping generations of students. A prolific artist, he collaborated with Earth, Wind & Fire and mentored talents such as Tyrese Gibson, Patrice Rushen, Thundercat, and Kamasi Washington.
The exhibition offers an intimate look at his legacy, featuring personal journals, awards, family photos, performance footage, and albums from artists he influenced. Beyond music, Andrews emphasized character, discipline, and professionalism—values he instilled in his students and encouraged them to carry into all aspects of their lives.
